January: top jobs

By | January 11, 2021

Next month will become rather busy, so be prepared. For detailed advice try out the National Allotment Society.

If you haven’t yet dug over your plot, and the ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged, then now is the time. If you have already done this, spread compost or well-rotted manure and be sure to cover with black polythene to warm the ground ready for early sowing.

Seed potatoes will be available soon (before the end of the month) so get your orders in. If you have your own, then start “chitting”. Earlies can go in next month

Take time to plan your plot. Order seeds and consider crop rotation. One suggestion is to rotate on a 3-year cycle of the following groups:

  1. Beans, peas and fruiting vegetables.
  2. Brassicas.
  3. Root vegetable and salads.
