March: top jobs

By | March 1, 2021

The weather might look inviting, but winter is far from over. Hard frosts, snow and cold winds are just as likely as mild sunny days this month. Some suggestions below but for more ideas, take a look at the National Allotment Society.

  • Rake seedbeds ready for sowing.
  • Apply fertilizer/compost (organic preferred).
  • Start weeding, digging out perennials and couch grass.
  • Prepare trenches for runner beans and fill with compost.

Well chitted first early potatoes can be planted out from middle of this month. Onion sets too as long as the soil is dry and warm.

Don’t forget to use a simple system of crop rotation as mentioned in our January post.
